for grantseekers

Thank you for your interest in partnering with us. Please take a moment to review our giving areas and eligibility guidance to gauge alignment with our grantmaking priorities. Then, we invite you to send us a brief email (200 words or less and no attachments, please) describing which giving area is most relevant for your work and how you support families with children ages 0-5. We will respond within five business days to let you know whether or not we will continue with the next step in our process. Current partners with questions about grants should contact their program officer.

Eligibility is based on mission alignment and geography, and grants are evaluated on a case-by-case basis through due diligence, site visits, and conversation. We look for 501(c)3, fiscally-sponsored projects, or public agencies that serve families with children age 0-5 in one or more of our giving areas. Our funding focuses on ten counties around the greater San Francisco Bay Area, as well as select regional, state and national efforts that affect those communities.

We encourage you to review our grants list and our current partners which will provide insights into our grantmaking priorities.

The following requests are typically outside of our guidelines:

  • Lobbying and activities to influence specific legislation

  • Medical research or specific diseases

  • Endowments

  • Individuals

In addition to the above, we do not support organizations that discriminate against groups or individuals or organizations that promote religious doctrine in the delivery of programs and services.

process & timeline

The foundation meets five times a year to make grant decisions, usually in March, May, July, September, and November. The average grant process takes between two to three months from start to finish. For most organizations under consideration for funding, a typical process is as follows:

  • A program officer will reach out for an introductory conversation and/or request a site visit

  • The program officer extends an invitation to apply for funding or shares the decision not to extend an invitation at this time

  • Prospective partners complete an online application, usually with a deadline at least one month prior to a grant meeting date

  • Shortly after a grants meeting, the program officer will notify partners of an award or declination

  • Approximately one month after the grants meeting and informal notification, partners receive formal notification in the form of an award letter and grant funds
